Classical design style is timeless and never goes out of style as is demonstrated in this modern classic house design. Located in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, this stylish villa embodies all the elements of classic design while retaining its own individual character. Classical design features are gracefully combined with more modern design, giving this villa a fresh, unique appearance that sets it apart from others in the neighborhood.
The most impressive element that greets visitors is the elegant entrance gate. Forged in wrought iron, the striking gate echoes the design of the wrought iron railings on the façade of the villa.
Proportion is all important in classical design and careful attention has been given to the scale of the fenestration in the façade treatment. Tall and streamlined, the window treatment is repeated on both the lower and upper levels creating a rhythm that adds to the grace of the villa. In traditional classic design style, stucco and molded cornices adorn the elevation of the villa.
Complimenting the classical nature of the villa, the surrounding landscape is designed in a minimalist modern style. Clean, simple wooden slats form a pergola above the outdoor seating area. The paving is monochromatic grey outdoor pavers laid in a repeated pattern with grass joints in between. The plant palette is simple, but striking; palms and perennials form the foundation of the planting with a few flowering shrubs to provide pops of color. The emphasis is on the textural variation rather than color.
The outdoor seating area is tucked into a corner of the property. A monolithic pergola in dark wood provides some shade. Stone cladding on the boundary wall provides a backdrop for the seating and picks up on the stone used on the exterior elevation of the villa. A subtle, reflective water feature introduces the soothing element of water, adding a serenity to the outdoor seating area. Simple, white upholstery contrasts with the dark outdoor furniture, which provides plush, comfortable seating for outdoor enjoyment.
Short palm species are strategically placed in the landscape to provide focal points in the garden. Accompanied by clipped topiary, the feathery palms provide an interesting contrast to the smooth, shiny green leaves of the shaped topiaries. Different shades of green add visual interest in the landscape without detracting from the charm of the villa.
Accent lighting highlights the texture of the palm trees at night, while directional wall washers draw attention to the stone cladding and stucco on the boundary walls.
Lighting forms an important aspect of the landscape and is used to highlight interesting features. Flush, inground lights emphasize the pathways, while LED strip lighting mounted to the underside of stair treads illuminate level differences in the garden. Wall washers provide an interesting pattern of light and shadows, drawing attention to the classical stone cladding.
Plants are carefully placed to highlight entrances and corners and compliment the house perfectly. Care has been taken to use similar species of planting to tie the landscape together rather than cramming in too many varieties of varied plants.
A monolithic pergola, similar to the one used for the seating area, provides a semi-shaded carport cover. Clipped perennial hedges are used to segregate the parking area from the rest of the landscape in a natural way. Lollipop topiaries create a natural ‘fence’ for the parking area.
The use of repeated elements in the landscape, although very clean and modern, are reminiscent of repeated features on the house elevation. These subtle design strategies are extremely effective in creating a harmonious balance between this modern classic house design and its minimalist landscape.
