Multi-family housing is becoming a popular housing trend as our lives get busier every day, leaving little time for travel or for pursuits such as gardening. Family compound design is a housing concept that caters to several families within one complex. It has several advantages including professionally landscaped and maintained houses and access to recreational facilities such as gyms, pools, and clubhouses.
Located at the intersection of two crossroads, this family compound in Khobar accommodates 8 residential units. They have access to a common recreational facility, central landscaped courtyard and a traditionally designed Arabic majlis at the front of the property.
The majlis houses a men’s seating area and a luxurious dining hall with high ceilings in a traditional Arabic design aesthetic. The façade treatment is ornate with white marble walls and a tall archway defining the entrance to the Majlis. Full-length windows with decorative gold etching complete the look.
The family units are accessed via a secondary road. Each unit has an open parking spot for a vehicle in front. While the entrance façade for the Majlis and dining hall have a distinctly Arabic design feel, the family compound design is more modern in look and feel. Designed as a series of cubes finished in plaster and wood, each unit is 2.5 stories high. The lower level houses the more common areas such as the living room and kitchen and the upper floor accommodates the more private bedroom spaces. Each unit has a delightfully landscaped, shaded rooftop patio with a barbeque area, that creates a private balcony space for residents.
Narrow walkways between units lead to a lush, landscaped courtyard, located in the center of the family compound design. This private courtyard offers residents a safe, sheltered community space, ideal for relaxing. Designed with a lovely water fountain, benches for seating and a small play structure for children, the courtyard provides an ideal setting for socializing.
The recreational facilities are located at the rear of the complex in a two-storied structure that houses many convenient facilities. These include a small café, swimming pool, game room, gym and convenient baby-sitting facilities for the residents. The recreational structure and the residential units all have views into the centrally landscaped courtyard, shielding the more private spaces from the hustle and bustle of the street.
Designed to provide community living in the heart of the city, this family complex design accommodates all the needs of the residents within a compact, secure and creatively designed facility.
