Carport Extension-1

Do You Need a Carport Extension?

Are you worrying about the space constraints in your home? Do you worry about not having a carport extension? Is the house not big enough for the family anymore? Are you thinking about moving because of it? Well, don’t.

A little while ago I was approached by some clients about a very common problem; they wanted a carport extension. It might seem like a heavy handed step, but let me assure you that it can be done in a reasonable way. I was presented with a home designed in a contemporary Brutalist style, so keeping up with the style of the house was very important. The dilemma here was how to fit in my carport extension in a way that would fit within the context of my site and complement the style of the home as well.

You should know that carport extensions are the most generic of the bunch, but you can also increase the square footage of your house with them too. Let’s have a look at how I tackled the dilemma of a carport extension.

Knowing the essentials

The best way to go about carrying out a carport extension is to observe the surroundings and come up with an initial image in your head. When I started my conceptual planning I took a careful look around the neighborhood to find out what renovations are popular in the area. In this way you can take note of ideas that you like too, and even the ideas that you do not. Every street has a ceiling value or a height constraint so don’t over develop if you want to see a good return on your investment. Keeping all these aspects in mind, I came up with an initial idea.

Figuring out the carport extension style

The best way of adding a carport to the house is to use similar style. If the house is modern, build a modern carport. If you have an older home, design to suit older styles. Try to use similar construction materials in the home and use the same roofing materials. If your home has Color bond roofing; the carport should also be Color bond. All the materials and colors must blend. You can also use the existing color scheme like I did; or use complementary colors; something that gives off a wholesome look.

I had a home that was designed in a contemporary Brutalist style, so I took common basic materials/colors and came up with a simple design that wouldn’t look out of context with the elevation of the house.

Know the value of a good extension

Adding a carport extension is basically expanding the covered area of your home. Increasing the square footage of your property is nearly always a money spinner and, according to the Nationwide Building Society, a well thought out extension can add anything up to 12 percent to the market value of your home.
You have to pay careful attention to the design and layout, as a poorly designed, oversized, ugly or badly placed extension could devalue your property.
My golden rule is to ensure that the extension is in keeping and proportion with the existing property and that the new space works well both inside and out.
I would also suggest to ensure that the ratio of upper to ground floor rooms remains balanced and that outside space is not significantly reduced.
